Responding to the announcement that the recommendations from the Review Body on Doctors' and Dentists' Remuneration (DDRB) will be implemented for the 26/27 pay award.

Dr Iona Collins, chair of the BMA’s Welsh Council said:

“The Welsh Government has repeatedly committed to the principle of full pay restoration for doctors employed by NHS Wales. However, today’s announcement proves that, in reality, they have once again chosen to impose an award that falls short of that promise.

“Last week, we heard reports of how doctors and their healthcare colleagues saved the NHS from collapse during a period of unprecedented pressure. This week, we see that 'superhuman' effort rewarded with a less than ordinary pay award. It makes no consideration for the way doctors routinely sacrifice their own health to bridge the gap between dwindling resources and rising patient demand.

“NHS Wales doctors require pay restoration—not just as a mark of appreciation for going above and beyond, but as a vital tool for retention. At a time when many are considering leaving for better terms and conditions elsewhere, this award does little to encourage staff to remain within the Welsh NHS.

“General practice faces a distinct challenge, as while accepting the pay award in principle, the Cabinet Secretary has linked the GP pay award to GMS contract negotiations with the incoming administration. This leaves general practice out in the cold compared to other elements of the medical profession. It is vital that the new Welsh Government engages with GPC Wales as soon as possible to address this inequity.

“We will now digest the DDRB report in full and further consult with our members—across all branches of practice—to gauge their views and consider our next steps. We have requested an urgent meeting with the Cabinet Secretary to discuss these failings.”
